Rules 2nd Choral Composition Contest.pdf

In 2018, on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary, the Sant Yago University Choir of Valencia ran the first edition of a Choral Music Composition Contest, which was very successful in terms of participation. This year the Sant Yago University Choir is announcing the second edition, once again aiming at the creation of new repertoire by national or international composers.

RULES:

1- Contestants

a. Participation in the competition is open to composers of any nationality and age

2- Compositions

a. Entry compositions must be original and unpublished, harmonisations and arrangements being excluded. Entries must be written for a regular mixed choir SATB a cappella with a reasonable use of divisi. Compositions must be at a technical level that makes its performance possible by an amateur choir, and will have a maximum duration of 5 minutes.

b. Only texts with a Christmas theme will be considered, written preferably in Valencian, Spanish, Latin or English. Composers will be responsible for the free use of the texts, and in any case they must respect the authorship rights stipulated in the Spanish Royal Legislative Decree 1/1996 of 12 April on Intellectual Property. The head of the score will include only the title of the piece and a pseudonym of the author.

3- Award

a. The award includes:

    • A monetary prize of €300.

    • The premiere of the winning piece.

    • Furthermore, the organisation will seek to promote the winning piece, which will include the following subtitle on the cover of the final score, as well as at the header or footer of all pages thereof: “Obra ganadora del II Concurso de Composición Coral Coro Universitario Sant Yago” (“Winning piece of the 2nd Choral Music Composition Contest Sant Yago University Choir”).

4- Deadline and submission

a. Composers are entitled to submit an unlimited number of unpublished pieces not previously performed in public. Entries must have a clear spelling and be sent by email to concurso@corosantyago.org with the score attached as a PDF file from an email address specifically created for this purpose using the usual free email services, such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo... The personal data introduced during the creation of this account must not include the author's real name in any section. In addition, the header of the address will follow the pattern “concurso_corosantyago_pseudonym@...”, where pseudonym must match the pseudonym appearing at the header of the score. The goal of this procedure is to guarantee the necessary impartiality and transparency. If this condition is not fulfilled and the recognition of the composer's identity is in any way facilitated, entries will not be considered.

Participants will submit only one piece per email, though they can send as many emails as works they want to present.

The organisation will answer the emails within a period of 48 hours in order to confirm the correct reception thereof.

b. All entry compositions must be received by 31 August 2020, 23.59 (Central European Time).

5- Jury and final results

a. An evaluation commission, comprised of people linked to the Valencian choir world, will preselect up to a maximum of 10 compositions. This set of finalists will then be assessed by the members of the Sant Yago University Choir, who will jointly choose the winner, advised by the evaluation commission. Exceptionally, an honorable mention with no related monetary prize may be conferred to one or more compositions, if appropriate. Decisions will be final.

b. The results of the contest will be first announced to the winner per email to the account from which the piece was submitted. This communication will take place between 1 and 15 October 2020. After the communication of the results, the winner will send per email his or her personal data to the organisation within a period of one month. In case the organisation does not receive the requested information within said period, the winner will lose the rights related to the prize, and the contest will end with no winner.

Once the identity of the winner is known by the organisation, the results of the contest will be announced on the website http://www.corosantyago.org and in the social networks of the Sant Yago University Choir.

In case the jury decides that no received work deserves the prize, the contest will end with no winner.

6- Winning compositions. Performances and exploitation rights

a. The winner of the contest and the recipient of the honorable mention, if one is conferred, authorise the Sant Yago University Choir to perform the awarded compositions, as well as to disseminate said compositions on the Internet.

b. The winner of the contest will transfer the exploitation rights (reproduction, distribution, public communication, transformation and making available) of said compositions on an exclusive and universal basis to the Sant Yago University Choir with the aim of releasing a compilation of the winning compositions and honorable mentions of previous contest editions. As of 1 January 2027, the composers will automatically regain the rights transferred to the Sant Yago University Choir, so that they may then decide at any moment to order the publication by interested third publishers.

c. In case an honorable mention is conferred, the composer will transfer his or her exploitation rights for the same purposes as those mentioned in Article 6.b, but in this case on a non-exclusive basis, so that he or she may decide at any moment to order the publication by interested third publishers.

7- Non-winning compositions

a. The organisation will eliminate and destroy all documentation related to the non-winning entry compositions within a maximum period of one month from the publication of the results.

8- Acceptance of the contest rules

a. By participating in the contest, participants fully agree with these rules, without any reservations, as well as with all decisions taken by the organisation.

b. The organisation is entitled to resolve any further doubts and to take all necessary decisions required to ensure the proper functioning of the contest, where not provided for in these rules.

9- Further questions

a. Further questions on these contest rules can be sent to the account concurso@corosantyago.org.
